Open the calculatorThese calculators are handy on a one-off pool. If you do this across a route every week, PoolBoss chemical tracking keeps each pool's volume and reading history in one place, so the dose is there without re-entering the numbers.
Where to start
Which number to work out first
Start with volume. Every other dose on this page is a rate per gallon, so if the gallons are a guess, so is the chemical. Work it out once from the pool’s shape and average depth, write it on the customer record, and you never do that math again.
Then fix the water in order. Total alkalinity first, because it buffers pH - chase pH while alkalinity is off and it drifts straight back. Once alkalinity sits in range, pH settles, and only then does chlorine behave the way the label says it will.
Sanitizer comes last, and it is where the two most common service calls live. Cloudy water and a chlorine reading that won’t climb are usually not a chlorine problem at all - they are stabilizer, pH, or a dose calculated against the wrong volume.
On a salt pool the cell does the chlorinating, so the number to hold is salt level, not free chlorine. The reasoning behind each dose is written out on the calculator page itself. For the longer explanations, the water chemistry guides cover why each reading moves the way it does.
